PALPUNG MONASTERY Palpung Tubden Chokhorling
Monastery is the seat of H.E. Situ Rinpoche and one of the most important Kagyu
monasteries in Tibet. It was founded by the eighth Situ Rinpoche in 1717 and was
the home of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrotaye, one of the principal founders of the
Ri-me, or non-sectarian, movement in the late 19th century. Jamgon Kongtrul's
activity incarnation, Kalu Rinpoche, was the meditation master at Palpung for
many years, after which he established his principal monastery in Sonada,
Darjeeling, India and founded meditation centers throughout the world.
