Labrang Monastery, known as Ganden Shedrub Dargye Tashi Gyesu Kyilwa'i Ling, or the short form Labrang Tashi Kyil, was founded in 1709 by Jamyang Shepa Ngagwang Tsondru a native of Amdo. The monastery was considered to be one of the Six Great Monasteries of the Gelug Tradition in the 18th and 19th centuries and the largest in Amdo.
