A partial set of Avadana paintings, teaching stories, in a New Menri painting style. The full set of paintings in this particular composition and commission number 37 and contain 108 stories. The first painting in the set recounts one story. The second painting has two stories and the remaining paintings have three stories each. The stories are based on the Leaves of the Heaven Tree a text composed by the Kashmiri poet Kshemendra (11th century). That text in turn is based on the Avadana stories from the Buddhist Pali canon of authoritative Buddhist scripture.
