There are more than sixteen paintings known to exist that belong to this Lamrim (Stages of the Path) Gelug Tradition Lineage set, circa 1800. The total number of paintings belonging to the original commission is currently unknown but could likely exceed more than fifty compositions in number. The majority of the paintings belong to private collections with only two known to belong to a museum. The last central figure among the known paintings below is Jampal Gyatso (1758-1804). The set of paintings was likely commissioned in the early 19th century.
The back of each painting is inscribed with an identical inscription of blessing and auspicious wishes.
Inscription:
"Om svasti! The essential meaning of the Eighty-four Thousand articles of the Dharma,
by the grace of the root Teachers, who have shown the stages of the path of enlightenment,
remain in this wisdom painting.
May whoever views this painting follow the path of a true holy spiritual friend and complete the practice of the two stages of the profound path of the perfect view.
May the teachings of the Stages of the Bodhisattva Path [Lamrim], source of benefit and happiness, spread in all directions and times, and liberate all beings by this great path. Supratishta vajre svaha."
