Interpretation / Description

Jamyang Rinchen Gyaltsen.

An inscription gives the name Jamyang Rinchen Gyaltsen. There were several high-ranking monastic teachers from the Sakya school with this name. The first was an Imperial Preceptor during the Yuan Dynasty (1257-1305). Then, two contemporaries who lived in the 15th century the abbot of Pokhang (spos khang) monastery (1348-1430) and abbot of Nenying (gnas rnying) Monastery (1364-1422). Finally, a member of the Khon family with this name who lived in the 16th century and is depicted in HAR #1531.

This statue has been dated to 1422 according to an inscription that is not visible in the photo. This means it most likely depicts Jamyang Rinchen Gyaltsen, the abbot of Nenying Monastery, and was likely made on the occasion of his death. The two hands are in the gesture of Teaching the Dharma and the two legs in vajra posture.
