The Royal Ontario Museum (see website) in Toronto is one of Canada's premier institutions holding collections on world cultures and natural history. Numbering almost six million objects, the Museum's diverse collections make the ROM one of the largest museums in North America.
The ROM's Himalayan collection forms an important part of the museum's larger Asian collection. It is an eclectic collection of materials, including ritual objects, sculptures, and over 100 paintings. Most of the collection was put together by George Crofts, a British fur trader and antiques dealer, who worked in China between 1918 and 1925. Important pieces in the collection include two large 15th century paintings, one of the Black Hayagriva and the other a Mandala of Robed Mahakala.
