Shalu Wangdu (b.1972) was born in Shalu town surrounding Shalu Monastery in Shigatse, Tibet. At the age of nine, he began formal training under a master painter named Kalsang.

In 1987, he participated in a major mural restoration and painting project at Tashilhunpo Monastery, working over a three-year period. In 1999, Xialu Wangdui founded a thangka painting school. His affiliations include membership in the China Artists Association and leadership roles in multiple regional organizations, including the Tibet Thangka Association and the Tibet Arts and Crafts Association.
