Painting Set: Margapala [4]

Lamdre Lineage Outline | Margapala Set 4 Outline

The 'Path Together with the Result' (Sanskrit: Margapala. Tibetan: lam dre bu tang che pa), is considered to be one of the most important Tantric Buddhist teachings to enter Tibet. It is believed to have originated with the Indian teacher Virupa who was regarded as a great adept (mahasiddha). The images below represent an incomplete set of paintings depicting the lineage of teachers starting the Primordial Buddha Vajradhara, and then the deity Vajra Nairatmya, followed by the Indian teachers, Mahasiddha Virupa, etc, down to the Tibetan teachers beginning with Drogmi Lotsawa. There were likely six or seven more paintings following after the painting depicting Sonam Tsemo and Dragpa Gyaltsen. The composition containing Kanha and Damarupa has been located in a private collection. The current whereabouts of the other missing paintings is not known.
