Painting Set: Arhats (Palpung Monastery Style)

The unique feature of these three paintings, that follow a Palpung Monastery style, are the Sixteen Arhats/sthavira depicted as Indians with simple monastic attire and the Four Guardian Kings in a peaceful appearance typical of Indian gods. Hvashang is depicted as Chinese and Dharmatala as a Central Asian.

Placed above Shakyamuni Buddha, the central composition of the three painting set, is the image of Amitayus Buddha. The painting on the left has White Tara at the top center and the painting on the right has Ushnishavijaya, in simple form, at the top center.
