Painting Set: Shakyamuni & Elders (Basil)

Shakyamuni & Elders (Basil) | Arhat Main Page | Museum der Kulturen, Basel

A complete set of seven paintings depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, the two principal disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, the Sixteen Elders (sthavira), the two attendants, Dharmatala and Hvashang and the Four Guardian Kings of the Directions. There are twenty-five figures that make up this iconographic group.

Art historians in the West have traditionally used over the past century or so the term 'arhat' to describe the group of sixteen students of the Buddha. The actual Sanskrit term used is 'sthavira' which means elder.
