This form of Vajrapani with the vajra scepter upraised can be either in Peaceful Appearance or Semi-peaceful Semi-wrathful Appearance. He can be seated in a variety of postures and generally is found in the three lower levels of Tantra: Kriya, Charya and Yoga. Vajrapani in this form is often confused with the figure of Padmasambhava known as Orgyan Dorje Chang.

Vajrapani with upraised vajra is associated with the Sarma traditions of Tantra coming from India in the 10th through 12th centuries with teachers such as Rinchen Zangpo and others. There is a Nyingma form of Vajrapani that has the same appearance but originates from different literature and Tantra sources (see example HAR #30996).
