The earliest known repeated figure composition paintings are from the the 13th century with a number of examples following in the centuries up to the 16th. All of these examples are depictions of Buddhas, either Shakyamnuni, Amitabha/Amitayus, Vairochana or Medicine Buddha. After the 17th century then any buddha, deity, protector or teacher figure could be represented in a repeated figure composition painting.
