HAR: Webinar 1 (Tara in Himalayan Art)

HAR: Question & Answer Webinar

Session One theme: What is the Function & Purpose of Tara in Himalayan Art? May 5, 2021.

Pre-submitted Questions:

1. When and how did Tara transform from being a bodhisattva to a mother of the Buddhas?

2. What is the evidence that this Green Tara was painted by Araniko?

3. Your email states that the right [hand] is in the gesture of supreme generosity, but I think it looks like it is “holding (or touching?) the Mt. Meru” instead, like the first left hand of Chintamanichakra.

4. What is the difference between White Tara and Green Tara?

5. Please explain in more detail how the eponymous historical persons (non-iconic) and meditational deities (iconic), such as Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Tara and the like, correlate with each other.

6. How to choose between Tara and Avalokiteshvara for blessings/grace?

7. I know there are many Taras, White, Green, and others. Could you speak about Tara with consort such as in the Chime Pakme Nyingtig sadhana?

8. Do you have any advice for someone wanting to become a thangka painter, or words of encouragement?

9. How did you and other colleagues receive training and become so knowledgeable?
