Video: Jonang Painting Sets

Painting sets that can be identified as belonging to the Jonang tradition of Tibetan Buddhism are based on historical figures and unique iconography of the Jonangpas. The majority of known sets depict the incarnation lineage of Taranata Kunga Nyingpo (1575-1635 [TBRC P1428]).

Later sets of paintings follow iconographic programs as established by Jonang Taranata and his writings. A number of mahasiddha sets of paintings, in the Khyenri style, follow the iconographic descriptions as written by Jonang Taranata. The Palpung monastery sets of the Eighty-four Mahasiddhas according to the system of Abhayakara Gupta (Abhayadatta) are based on the text of Taranata. The sets of block prints of the Rinjung Lhantab of the 4th Panchen Lama, Lobzang Tenpa'i Nyima (1782-1853), are based on the Rinchen Trengwa of Taranata.
