Sculpture Set 1: Kashmiri ivory votive plaques of Shakyamuni's life story

Artworks such as the present were produced for a short period during which Buddhist art flourished under the Karkota Kings in Kashmir (600-855). These particular votive sculptures were likely two of a set depicting all the "Eight Great Events" of the Shakyamuni Buddha's life story. These were both acquired by Sherman E. Lee from Spink & Son, London, as he acted as the advisor to John D. Rockefeller the 3rd while collecting for the Cleveland Museum, as well.
