Video Book Review: The Cotton-Clad Mila, The Tibetan Poet-Saint's Life in Pictures

Jeff Watt, 1-2024

Dear HAR-Team

Happy new year and all the best for you and a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart for your immeasurably valuable work!

I'm writing to you from Zurich with a short comment on the video of Milarepa's life story paintings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wD59bPNSuk
I am currently working on a mural in Swayambhu, in the Sangye Chöling monastery of Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche, where the life story of Milarepa was painted in 1996 in a large mural, which in my opinion is very probably based on this thangkaset from Ladakh that you mention in the video. This Ladakhi set is associated with the Drukpa Kagüpas, as is Sangye Chöling monastery. You can find prints of the set with detailed excerpts in Joss Bachhofer (1986): "Verrückte Weisheit. Leben und Lehre Milarepas" (Edition Schangrila). On page 11 Bachhofer writes on the source of the set: On request by the abbot of Hemis, Mepham Tsering Tänle, the third Taksang Gyaltse Repa (1735-1805), the inscriptions and order of the set was layed out in 1775 by the 7th Drukchen Rinpoche. It was painted in Sangnag Chöling, the seat of the 7th Drukchen Rinpoche, and brought to Hemis, where it is displayed in the private rooms of the abbot on the occasion Hemis Setchu.

I hope that this information will help you and that you can place it somewhere for further research.

Warm wishes form Zurich
