Collection of the National Museum of Asian Art (Atelier Series)

National Museum of Asian Art (Shrine)

These four compositions based on stylistic similarities, drawing and colour, appear to be creations of the same painting atelier. They are not as a group a set of paintings, but rather a series of compositions with mixed and unrelated subjects. A proper painting set is made up of multiple compositions depicting the same overall subject such as a life story, a sequence of lineage teachers, or related deities of a Tantric cycle. All four paintings are framed by identical brocade strips.

It is very difficult to know if these paintings were intended to remain as series or were offered for individual purchase. It is also not known if there were more, or whether all of the compositions from this painting atelier had the same appearance and style.
