Shalu Monastery. Tsang Province, 1996.
The blue-tiled roofs of Shalu Monastery, after which the Association is named, in Tsang province, 40 km south of Shigatse. It was the seat of Buton Rinchendrub (1290-1364), the great Tibetan polymath, artist and nonsectarian spiritual master. His monastery remains nonsectarian to this day. The monastery contains numerous extremely fine and varied wall paintings and sculptures, many going back to Buton's day or earlier. Architectural consolidation work was done between 1994 and 1996 in order to preserve wall paintings.
