Wutaishan: Pilgrimage to Five Peak Mountain
May 10 - October 16, 2007
Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17th Street, New York, NY. 10011, USA

An exhibition about the sacred mountain Wutaishan (Mount Wutai), located in Shanxi Province of China, is believed to be the earthly abode of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom Manjushri, and for a thousand years it has been a focus of transnational pilgrimage for the Chinese, Tibetans, Mongols, and Manchus alike. While Wutaishan had been a sacred site to Chinese Buddhists even before the Tang dynasty (618-907), it became increasingly important to Tibetans, Mongols and Manchus by the 18th century.
