There are only a few ways to distinguish the figures of Mandarava from Yeshe Tsogyal. When they are placed as a sculpture set then Mandarava will be on the proper right side of Padmasambhava with Yeshe Tsogyal seated or standing on the left side.

Mandarava will often be attired in light and ethereal clothing because she come from the warmer climates of the south. Yeshe Tsogyal, a Tibetan, will be dressed in heavier garments due to the higher and colder climate. This however is not a rule but rather something followed by some artists but not all.
