Painting Set: Panjarnata Eight Deity and Hevajra [II]

Panjarnata Art History

Subjects, Topics & Types:
- Panjarnata Eight Deity [Single Composition]
- Panjaranata Mahakala Page
- Five Activity Protectors
- Sakya Protectors Outline

The recent discovery of a portrait painting of Jamgon Amnyezhab (1597-1659) allows us to identify him as the donor figure, present in each painting in this painting set. The date of this set has been revised accordingly to the 17th century.

To identify these two paintings as part of the same set, we need to look at the very specific details of the skull border around each painting. The first border painted around the black thangka is white skulls, then a border of blue vajras, then a border of red flames. The style of the flames and skulls matches exactly between the two paintings. In comparison to another set: Panjarnata Eight Deity [I] the skulls and flames are different in each of the sets. Both sets depict the same group of deities in a similar - but distinctly different - art style, and these minor details of the skull border allow us to differentiate between the two sets.

Additionally the sets must be separate, because one of the Activity Protectors named Putra is painted as a central figure in a completely different style for each set.
