There are a handful of deities and figures that are depicted either inside of, or in front of, a mountain cave. For the deities the cave has a special relationship based on the ritual literature. For the other figures it relates to a narrative or historical event.
A page has been created to highlight the relationship of Deities and Stupas. There are a handful of Buddhas and deities that are depicted seated either inside or in front of a stupa. In some cases the stupa is the special attribute for the Buddha or deity, or it relates to a unique situation, narrative or historical event.

The Eye Clearing Avalokiteshvara Main Page has been updated with additional images.
Although originally a Nyingma practice found in Southern Tibet, the Eye Clearing Avalokiteshvara has grown immensely in popularity in Mongolia. One of the largest images in the Ganden Monastery, Ulan Bator, is this Eye Clearing form of the deity. It is possible that the 8th Jetsun Dampa is principally responsible for the 20th century popularity.
