Yuan Style Art, Araniko School - Added

A gallery for Yuan Style Art specifically of the Araniko School has been added.


Araniko is primarily remembered for his architectural achievements and for the creation of sculptural objects. A painting of the Emperor and Empress are attributed to him. The two known remaining works generally agreed upon are the White Stupa in Beijing and the Stupa at Wutaishan Mountain.

A Rakta Yamari Textile of the Yongle Emperor - Updated

This textile composition of Rakta Yamari was made either as a set or a series of works created in the workshops of the Yongle Emperor most likely between 1416 and 1418. The other known works from the same time and atelier are a Chakrasamvara, Vajrabhairava and Panjara Mahakala.

The Buddha as a Child in Sculptural Representations - Added

The historical Shakyamuni Buddha is sometimes depicted as a child in sculptural representations. These depictions are generally based on the iconography found in Tibetan paintings of the Buddha's life story where the child immediately after birth takes seven steps in each of the ten directions (see a painted example - upper right corner).
